A fan of Shelley Long has been writing to her since 1983 just to be writing. He assumed she will never get the fan letters, he only wrote them just for something to do. Guess what? She actually got them or probably some of them anyway. The way it worked then is that secretaries would have read them first and if they're okay they're pass on to her. Sometimes even the producers of the shows read them first.
In 1990, Shelley Long was on the Dick Cavet show a talk show talking about her upcoming TV movie "The Voices Of Truddi Chase" base on a true story. On the interview Shelley said "I know of at least one person who will get something special " What the person got which is so special is her saying her fan's first name "Stanley" though out the movie.
In fact (1990) this fan probably saw Shelley Long in a local grocery store without realizing it. She was right next to him looking at steaks. The fan realize she might want to pay for the steaks for him. He didn't want that, but they did talk and then she left with the fan still wondering if it was the real Shelley Long or not. After all she looked too young for the age of 40 not yet 41 since her birthday is August 23rd. The only clue he had was the shape of the bridge of her nose. It did look similar to the real Shelley's bridge.
If that fan was smart he should have asked her if she was really Shelley Long ,and if so, ask her for an autograph which would be authentic and not a copy like the one get he got through the mail.
I knew what my brother would be thinking ,he always thinks of terms of money ,and probably would of tought I would sell the autograph. No way, it is something I can touch that she touched and I would have kept it forever.
Now on one of the scenes of "Truddi Chase" (4 hour version) she is in an office with envelopes pinned to the wall. You'll see one envelope with "Okay" written across it. It is actually a fan letter that a secretary read before passing it on to Shelley.
Now if a person sends fan letters out to stars today it is still read by secretaries but some distance away via monitors and computers and the computers themselves open the fan letters.
In 1990 the movie "The Voices Of Truddi Chase" was shown on the ABC network as a two night event (4 hours). However, the edited
1 3/4 hour version can be seen below, the movie starts with fade-in from black.
