When I had weatherization done in 2009 by my cooking stove they did replace the pipe to the stove even the gas value. One day I wanted to clean the stove, but before I did that I also wanted to turn the gas off , but it was the push-in type gas value and due to my
arthritis I was too weak to push in on the value and turn it off at the same time.
I had to call a younger friend to turn off the gas value off for me. What they should have done is make it easier for people to turn the gas off just by turning the knob, and just use the hard push-in and turn when they wanted the gas on. I decided to keep the gas off for my own safety concerns. After all there are other devices a person can cook with, like an electric frying pan, electric oven and microwave. So at present I am going that route.
The gas to my cooking stove will remain off, besides my stove had seen its days and getting worn out and the pilot lights can hardly be lit, so it is best not to mess with it !
Also when I had weatherization done they also had installed an one stage energy efficient furnace it will keep a person warm when the temperature is above 30 degrees Fahrenheit but below 20 degrees Fahrenheit it does nothing but blow cold air though the registers. The flames in the burner are only 2 1/2 inches tall.
But there are 2 stage energy efficient furnaces that has two burners. When first turn on the first stage will start (3 foot burner flame) and when the temperature on the thermostat is reached it will automatically go to its second stage ( 2 1/2 inches flames).
The two stage energy efficient furnace comes with two thermostats so if the weather is really bad like 50 below zero a person can adjust the thermostats just to stage one and use the 3 foot flame all day during below zero temperature times. It may be just that day, a few days , a couple of weeks or even all month.
The gas value on my furnace fortunately is the level handle type no push in, just up and down and it's behind the lower furnace door. :)
NOTE: IF YOU HAVE AN ONE STAGE ENERGY EFFICIENT FURNACE AND THE INDOOR TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 55 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT DO NOT TURN IT OFF. COLD AIR WILL ENTER THE BURNER CHAMBER MIXING WITH WARM AIR CAUSING CONDENSATION MAKING IT UNABLE TO LIGHT. KEEP THE FLAMES BURNING IN THERE !
BUY/USE A CERAMIC SPACE HEATER AT THOSE TIMES INSIDE A SINGLE ROOM.
